Prof. K.A. Jaleel passes away

It is with deep sorrow that we share the news about the sad demise of our former Principal Prof. K.A. Jaleel.  Prof. K.A. Jaleel died today early morning (12-09-12). His Janazah Prayer will take place at 10.00 am. on 13-09-12 at Masjd-Ul-Azhar, the  Campus Mosque.

Prof. Jaleel  was 90.  He was born to the late B. Kunhali and Naseema ( both North Paravur) on September 22, 1922. Prof. Jaleel  graduated from University College, Trivandrum in 1945 and received Post-graduate degree from Travancore University in 1946.

He started his career as Lecturer in English, Islamiah College, Vaniyambadi and then joined the service of Farook College as lecturer in English in 1948. He has served the college as Lecturer & Professor (1948-1957) and Principal (1957-1979). After relieving from the  college service he served as Vice Chancellor of University of Calicut (1979-1983) succeeding Prof. N. A. Noor Mohamed.  

He was an enthusiastic educationalist who made outstanding contributions to the society and to the nation by performing many important roles in his life. In the field of education he has served in various capacities like Chairman, Task Force for Establishing University in North Malabar (1995) Presently Kannur University,  Member, Special Committee  appointed by Govt. of Kerala for advising the Govt. on starting of more universities in the state (1967), Member, Special Committee  appointed by Govt. of Kerala for advising the Govt. on starting of more universities in the state (1967), Member, Kerala Public Examination Board, Govt. of Kerala(1979-83),Member, Task Force for Planning for Higher Education (VI plan) appointed by govt. of Kerla,  Member, Special  Committee, Central Wakf Council for co-ordination of Modern Education and Deeni Taleem (1973-75),  Member, UGC Committee for Academic Centres (1975), Member, Syndicate, University of Calicut (1968-76), Dean, Faculty of Languages, University of Calicut (1976-78), Member, Senates of the universities : Madras University (1957-60), Kerala University (1957-68) and Cochin University of Science and Technology (1975-79), Member, Academic Councils of the universities: Madras University (1948-51) and University of Calicut (1968-78).

His performance in Socio-Cultural plane is also remarkable. He has served in the field of socio-cultural in various capacities like as Advisor, All India Muslim Educational Society, President Calicut Rotary Club (1971), Chairman, Rotary District Conference (1971), Advisor, All India Muslim Educational Society, Advisor, Kerala Muslim Educations Society, Chairman, Dr. T.P. Mohammead Memorial Trust, Honorary Member, Calicut Rotary Club, President, Calicut English Association.  He was the founder Chairman of SAFI (Social Advancement  Foundation of India). He showed his exceptional ability while serving as Chairman, Kerala Wakf Board(1998-2003).

Prof. Jaleel has many publications in English and Malayalam.  “Humour in Ancient Greek Literature” (1958), “Education in the Ancient World” (1970), “Vidyabhasanirikshanangal” ,  “New Horizons”, “Thirinchi Nokkumbol” are some them.

He was honored with many awards and recognition.  He received IC Chakko Award by Kerala Sahithya  Academi (1991), Sha Saheb Award (1992), Senior Citizen Excellence Award (1994) Ramashramam Award (1997), Rotary Award for Excellence in Education (1997) and Gem Serve Award for outstanding service to society are the major awards among them. 

Prof. Jaleel Sahib is survived by his second wife E.T. Noorjahan, sons Shuoukathali T.A.(Qatar) and Haleem T.A. (Farook College), daughters Zuhra T.A. (Doha) and Naseem T.A. (Farook College), daughters-in-law Thajnu A.M.and Luna, sons-in-law Dr. Salahudeen and Prof. C.P. Ummerkutty, brothers Aboobacker, Abdulla, Abdul Azeez and Razak and sisters Beefathumma and Zainaba. His first wife K.M. Ayisha died in 1997.
