If we were to describe Professor U Mohammed's personality in one word, that word would be "mature". To all the spheres he worked in, he brought an attitude of maturity, pragmatic idealism and rectitude. It is often said that an educational institution could be termed mature when one of its alumni gets to be its head. Prof UM was the first alumnus of Farook College to become its Principal.

Prof U Mohammed (1933 - 2016) was teacher, administrator, writer, researcher, educationist and academician. He was a student of Farook College during 1951-1953 for B Sc Mathematics, and later took his BT degree, MA degree in English, and PGDES. After a stint as Assistant in the Education Ministry, Government of India, from 1956 to 1966, he joined as Lecturer in the Department of English, Farook College, on 5 July 1966. He got promoted as Professor, and eventually took over as Principal, after Prof V Muhammad's retirement, in 1983. Prof UM retired as Principal in 1988.

He continued to be associated with the affairs of the College and Rauzathul Uloom Association, as Welfare & Development Officer, Member of the Managing Committee, and General Secretary of RUA. In addition, he served as Director of Al-Farook Educational Centre, Vice-Chairman of Al-Farook Residential School, President of Farook High School, and Member of Al-Azhar Managing Committee.  Prof U Mohammed also served as the State General secretary of Muslim Service Society.

He has authored many books, in Malayalam and English, on several issues of academic and social justice interest. These include an analysis of the Sachar Committee Report, and a study of Reservation, Creamy Layer and Minorities' Rights. He has undertaken several studies under UGC fellowship, and his treatise"Educational Empowerment of Kerala Muslims – A Socio Historical Perspective", a research project under ICHR, has been published by Other Books. He was co-translator of C N Ahmad Maulavi's book "Islam: A Comprehensive Study".

A gentle person, erudite scholar and able administrator, Prof UM will be missed by the Farookabad community as well as by a vast number of his students, colleagues and fellow travellers.

Professor U Mohammed passed away on Thursday morning (September 22, 2016).  Professor is survived by his wife Mrs Laila, and children Mariyam Parvin, Dr Faizal and Haseena.
